Can I connect 5.1 surround sound speakers for PC to my TV?

I was wondering if I could plug the speakers into the headphone socket on my tv and get decent results... The speakers are PC Line PCL-51001 5.1 Speakers. I don't want to pay a lot for a high quality tv surround sound system.

Thanks.

No, each speaker on a surround surround sound system (or PC) has a seperate wire for each speaker if they are true 5.1 (if it was surround sound your PC would have a number of different coloured 3.5mm jacks.

Thats not to say sound won't

HDMI will be an improvement

Q. I’m using a home-theater receiver without HDMI switching, so I do all the switching through the TV and send the audio to the receiver. I have the Comcast box, TV and Blu-ray player connected to the receiver via optical cables through a mechanical optical switch. Since I use cable 95 percent of the time, it is not that inconvenient. I have a 5.1 speaker system using Polk speakers and have it properly set up using a sound level meter and test tones. I am happy with the sound, but would a new receiver do a better job of decoding as well as be more convenient to operate? Would I run into any problems using a 7.1 receiver with a 5.1 speaker system? Is there any loss of information?

A. A receiver with HDMI switching will be much more convenient to operate. You will only have one connection from each component to the receiver and one connection from the receiver to the TV, and you will be able to switch sources using your remote control instead of using the manual switch. The HDMI receiver will decode the high definition audio formats from Blu-ray discs, which will provide a noticeable improvement in sound quality. There is no loss of information using a 7.1 receiver with a 5.1 speaker system. In fact, if you get a 7.1-channel multi-zone receiver you can use the unused two channels to drive speakers in another room via Zone 2 operation.

Q&A: Is it possible to use computer surround sound speakers with ...

Probably not.

TV connections vary and you didn’t tell us which one you have, so I’ll have to make some assumptions about that.

These speakers require 5 channel analog input (see 1st link). I’ve never seen a tv that had anything but 2 channel analog output (example in 2nd link), so I doubt you will be able to get true surround sound out of these speakers coming straight from a tv. (You could hook up the TV left and right channel outputs to the speaker front/rear left and front/rear right channels to get sound out of 4 speakers, but it would NOT be 5.1 surround sound or even 4.1 sound.)

I don’t think you are going to find a 5.1 home theater set for anything like the price of these speakers (about $ 80). I don’t see how you are going to get 5.1 any other way, though.

The Logitech system is proprietary to a PC and requires one to operate properly. Some here have suggested you can just run the signals from a source with some home made cables but you don’t get any of the necessary re-eqing features of receiver. I would suggest that you stick to the HTIB set ups vs. a rube goldberg set up with the PC speakers.

Before you buy a sound bar speaker, read this
A skinny sound bar positioned under a sleek display is certainly a more appealing solution than a 5.1 or even stereo pair of speakers. There's just one problem: sound bars can't fill a room with sound nearly as well as separate speakers can. Stereo
