Grumpy Old Fan | DC's December is getting closer all the time

Nothing wrong with a new Death of Superman collection, though I thought DC recently solicited a new expanded Death of Superman omnibus. Seems strange to publish both at once, but maybe they’re stacking the deck with the most well-known Superman story out there before the Man of Steel movie?

I wondered if maybe Man of Steel Vol. 7 was really meant to pave the way for a Vol. 8 with the Superman-Wonder Woman kiss, too — though Vol. 8 would have to come out really soon to be relevant. Got to appreciate DC’s gumption publishing that Vol. 7 though, which is almost entirely Millennium crossovers, and it doesn’t get more esoteric than that. If I recall correctly, however, it also has a good depiction of Maggie Sawyer’s relationship with her partner, which wasn’t as often seen as it is today, so that might garner some interest.

I wish, like m!ke, that DC would either keep publishing these Man of Steel volumes until they finally collect “The Supergirl Saga” where Superman murders the Phantom Zone criminals, and/or that they would stop these Man of Steel paperbacks altogether and collect something like Superman #1-50 and the related Action and Adventure titles in one of these big ol’ omnibuses.

Nonetheless it was a magnificent movie, just poorly marketed and distributed at the time.

Michael Caine made his name when The UK owned its own cinema chains – even now the third biggest revenue in the world for cinema releases – and had a quota of UK  financed films which had to be shown on them. We also produced Peter Sellars, Richard Burton, James Mason, Peter Ustinov, Roger Moore, Sean Connery, Joan Collins  by the same route.

The Life of Brian came second (and again was filmed outside the UK )  as was of course Ghandi which is at number ten.

The equation of where a film is made (which determines 90% of cast and crew), who finances it and takes the profits,  and who wrote-directed-starred in it  is always the three pillars of whether a film is British in any meaningful sense.

The Public Inquiry which will decide the outcome of Pinewood Shepperton plc plan to build 1400 houses on greenbelt land will take place in the summer. The fact it is now so close (and has already cost the company £10 million) has led to a very uneasy truce between the main shareholders (who are in this for property values not movies)  and The Board (who have long since decided this is a property company in the UK and a sales agent for foreign studios in other countries).
